President Rose Francine Rogombe -

Born Etomba Alela on September 20^th, 1942 in Lambaréné, Gabon’s first female magistrate, Rose Francine Rogombe, was sworn in as interim President of the Gabonese Republic on Wednesday, June 10^th, 2009.

She was then President of the Senate.

Rose Francine Rogombe, born Etomba Alela on September 20, 1942 in Lambaréné, is recognized for her actions during the transition period in 2009, following the death of President Omar Bongo Ondimba in June 2009.

She served as interim head of state for 4 months.

After starting her law studies at the Nancy Law School in France, Rose Francine Rogombe continued her 3rd and 4th years of law studies in Libreville. Following independence, Rose Francine Rogombe joined the institution and became the country’s first female magistrate in 1967.

After joining the judiciary, Rose Francine Rogombe rose through the professional ranks.

She was a public prosecutor before becoming an investigating judge, then Vice-President of the Libreville High Court and an advisor to the Legal Division of the Supreme Court.

In 1983, Rose Francine Rogombe was appointed Secretary of State for the Advancement of Women and in 1988, she took charge of Human Rights.

In 1990, the woman who would become the third president of the Gabonese Republic left the political scene to join her mentor, Georges Rawiri. In 2008, she became a municipal councilor for the 2nd district of Lambaréné, then a senator.

A year later, on February 16, 2009, Rose Francine Rogombe took over as president of the upper house (Senate).

She led Gabon during a four-month transition period following the death of President Omar Bongo Ondimba.

It was in this context that she subsequently compiled the electoral register, initiated consultations with the nation’s key stakeholders, and organized the September 2009 presidential election.

In early 2015, Rose Francine Rogombe was re-elected Senator for the 1st constituency of Lambaréné.

On April 10, 2015, she died in Paris at the age of 72.
