Created in February 2013, the commune of Akanda is located north of Libreville. With Akanda National Park as its main attraction, this commune is subdivided into two (2) arrondissements and encompasses most of Mondah Bay.

Akanda National Park is one of Central Africa’s most important sites for migratory waterfowl from all over the world.
The sandbanks uncovered by the tide on Akanda’s long beaches are a haven for many species of waterfowl.

The André Raponda Walker arboretum boasts a unique biodiversity, notably its flora, which is extremely rich in local endemic species such as Dichapetalum geminostellatung, Jollydora pierrei, Acridocarpus, Acioa, Impatiens and large trees including Okoumé (Aucoumea Klaineana), Ozouga Saccoglottis Gabonensis, Ngaba Librevillea Klainei, Agnuhé Pentadesma butyracea and many other species.
