The Father of Independent Gabon, Léon Mba Minko, was born on February 9, 1902, in Libreville, in the village of Keleré, where his mausoleum now stands near the capital’s general hospital.
He belonged to a Christianized and Francophile indigenous family.
From a peaceful childhood, Léon Mba already distinguished himself as a brilliant student, and this, from primary school where he followed a brilliant schooling (1909-1916), at the end of which he landed his first job at the military sub-intendance of Libreville.
This did not prevent him from continuing his studies by correspondence, at the École Universelle.
This cycle completed (1918), he joined the administration where he worked as a writer-interpreter.
In 1920, Léon Mba entered the Customs administration by competitive examination.
Thus he occupied various positions in Port-Gentil, Pointe-Noire and Libreville as a shipping clerk.
First recognition from local authorities, Léon Mba was appointed district chief of Libreville North (Mont-Bouët sector) in 1926.
He also held the seat of assessor at the first-degree indigenous court, and that of deputy at the Libreville Municipal Commission.
Léon Mba created the Gabonese Joint Committee and then merged with the African Democratic Party to give birth to the Gabonese Democratic Bloc (BDG) in 1953, of which he became Secretary General.
Three years later, in November 1956, the party won the municipal elections.
With 19 out of 27 councilors, Léon Mba was elected the first mayor of the commune of Libreville.
On July 24, 1960, the National Assembly conferred the rank and prerogatives of Head of State on Prime Minister Léon Mba.
He submitted this nomination to the Gabonese people in a universal suffrage election on February 12, 1961.
He then became President of the Republic.
On February 17, 1964, Léon Mba was the victim of a coup d’état before being returned to power.
He was re-elected in March 1967 with an overwhelming majority before passing away on November 28 in Paris.
He is remembered as a brilliant and patriotic politician.
His slogan « Gabon First » sums up the vision of the father of independence.
