President Omar Bongo Ondimba -

Born Albert-Bernard Bongo on December 30, 1935 in Lewaï, the Father of Renovation El Hadj Omar Bongo Ondimba is Gabonese Republic 2nd president.

He ruled Gabon for 42 years, an island of peace and stability in Africa.

Orphaned by his father at the age of 7 and the youngest of twelve children in a farming family, Albert Bernard Bongo was born on December 30^th, 1935 in the village of Lewai, located in Haut-Ogooué.

While his guardian forbade him from continuing his studies in France, he moved to Brazzaville to enroll in a technical high school.

Later, he became the only Black man to complete his military service in the French Air Force in Chad. While his hostile stance against the colonial administration caused him some problems, his military experience would play an important role in his later career.

Upon returning to Gabon, which had become independent, he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where his qualities were quickly recognized. These qualities earned him rapid access to the highest positions in government.

As the right-hand man of Léon Mba, the future president of Gabon, he became Vice-President of the Gabonese Republic in 1960 before succeeding him after his death in 1967.

Shortly after his accession to the highest office, President Omar Bongo became the leader of the Gabonese Democratic Party.

He launched major projects, such as the Transgabonais, which would mark the history of Gabon.

He converted to Islam in 1973 just before establishing diplomatic relations with Muammar Gaddafi’s Libya. Albert-Bernard became El Hadj Omar after a pilgrimage to Mecca.

In 1990, El Hadj Omar was pushed to organize a national conference at the end of which he introduced multiparty politics.

Respected by his peers, Omar Bongo would assert himself in resolving crises on the African continent.

Omar Bongo Ondimba died on June 8th , 2009. After 42 years as President of Gabon, his greatest legacy on a continental and global scale remains that of peace.
